The summer season of 1923 gave newspaper readers a break from the press circus surrounding the tomb of Tutankhamun, the invention of which only a few months earlier had grabbed the world’s consideration. However an nameless editorial within the Harlem-based weekly Negro World was suspicious of the sudden lull in what had been close to fixed protection. The archaeologists should have clammed up for a purpose, the editorial surmised, and that purpose might solely be race. If Tutankhamun proved to have pores and skin the color of ‘unbleached coal’, public curiosity would disappear, for ‘white Individuals name nothing creditable Negroid if they will probably discover one other identify for it’.
